Mornings are often the busiest part of the day. Between alarms, commutes and getting everyone out of the door, breakfast can easily become an afterthought. The good news is that a balanced breakfast doesn’t need to take long. With a little planning, you can have something nourishing ready in five minutes or less.
A helpful breakfast formula is to combine a source of fiber (such as oats, wholegrain bread or fruit), some protein (such as yogurt, eggs, milk, nut butter or beans) and, if you like, a little healthy fat (such as nuts or seeds). Here are seven easy ideas.
1. Overnight oats
Mix rolled oats with milk or a fortified plant drink and a spoonful of plain yogurt in a jar. Add cinnamon or a little grated apple, cover and leave in the fridge overnight. In the morning, top with berries and a sprinkle of seeds.
Why it works: it’s made the night before, so there’s no cooking at all.
2. Wholegrain toast with nut butter and banana
Toast a slice of wholegrain bread, spread it thinly with peanut or almond butter, and top with sliced banana. A pinch of cinnamon adds flavor.
Why it works: ready in three minutes and easy to eat on the go.
3. Yogurt and fruit bowl
Spoon plain yogurt into a bowl and top with fresh or frozen fruit, a small handful of oats or unsweetened muesli, and some chopped nuts or seeds. If you like it sweeter, the fruit is often enough. If not, add just a small drizzle of honey.
Why it works: no cooking, lots of variety, and you can change the fruit with the seasons.
4. Veggie egg muffins
On the weekend, whisk eggs with chopped spinach, peppers, onion and a little cheese. Pour into a muffin tin and bake until set. Once cool, store them in the fridge for up to a few days and reheat until piping hot.
Why it works: a protein-rich breakfast that’s ready in the time it takes to make a cup of tea.
5. Breakfast smoothie
Blend milk or a plant drink with a banana, a handful of frozen berries, a spoonful of oats and a spoonful of yogurt or nut butter. Add a handful of spinach if you like. You won’t taste it much.
Why it works: quick to make and easy to drink on the way out.
Tip: whole fruit is more filling than juice, and adding oats and yogurt makes a smoothie more satisfying than fruit alone.
6. Savoury beans on toast
Warm a portion of reduced-salt, reduced-sugar baked beans (or any canned beans with a little tomato and spice) and serve on wholegrain toast with a few cherry tomatoes on the side.
Why it works: cheap, filling, and full of fiber and plant protein.
7. Grab-and-go breakfast wrap
Fill a wholegrain wrap with scrambled eggs or mashed avocado, a handful of spinach and some salsa. Wrap tightly in foil if you need to eat it on your way.
Why it works: portable and easy to vary with what you have.
Make mornings easier
A few small habits make a big difference:
- Prepare the night before. Set out bowls, soak oats or chop fruit before bed.
- Keep staples stocked. Oats, eggs, yogurt, frozen fruit and wholegrain bread cover most of the ideas above.
- Rotate two or three favorites. You don’t need a different breakfast every day.

What if you’re not hungry in the morning?
Some people simply aren’t hungry early in the day, and that’s okay. You might prefer a small snack later in the morning, such as a piece of fruit with a few nuts. Listen to your body and choose a routine that fits your life.
